Six questions come up in my world more than any others. I have spent the last eleven years around process instrumentation and precision measuring tools, and I have also handled 140-plus rush orders for plants with unscheduled shutdowns. Emerson, digital micrometers, thermal imaging, and the phrase 'how do I get support' all blend together in that work. Here is what I tell people.

What exactly does Emerson do in industrial automation?
Emerson is the name behind Rosemount pressure transmitters, Fisher control valves, DeltaV software, and a massive catalog of temperature, flow, and level instruments. If you are in a chemical plant, refinery, or manufacturing line, Emerson stuff is probably measuring something near you right now. The logo you see on instrumentation is a globe-and-wordmark, but the brand is really about process control and reliability.
What was considered a 'measurement company' in 2020 has become more of a software and analytics company. I should add that the fundamentals still matter: a pressure transmitter that drifts is a pressure transmitter that drifts, no matter how clever the cloud dashboard is.
Can I use the Emerson logo on my website or marketing materials?
Short answer: don't. Trademarks like the Emerson logo exist so customers know who made the product. If you are an independent repair shop, integrator, or consultant, and you put the Emerson logo on your own estimate sheet to imply an official partnership, you are asking for a legal letter. Emerson's trademark policy is published on emerson.com, and they do act on misuse. In 2023, a repair shop I worked with spent most of a day removing logos from their website after getting a cease-and-desist email. That labor cost was painful.
That said, you can mention 'Emerson' and reference their parts or support pages. You just can't make the logo look like your own brand.
How do I contact Emerson support when a plant is down?
First, get the serial number and model code from the instrument nameplate. I cannot overstate this. Emerson support can do far more with a full model string than with the phrase 'we have a dead transmitter.'
Then go to the Emerson support portal at emerson.com/en-us/support. Create a case online. In my experience, a case created at 2 p.m. with a valid serial number gets a faster response than calling with vague details. If you need a replacement part, the portal also shows spare parts and repair options. Oh, and if you can attach a photo of the wiring or the error message, do it. It saved us a 45-minute call once.
I should note: the support portal has become more complicated since 2022. Account access and product registration are mandatory for some parts. Build an account before you need it, not when the line is already down.
Digital micrometer or coordinate measuring machine: which one is better?
These serve different jobs. A coordinate measuring machine moves a probe and calculates measurement points in 3D. It will measure complex castings, gear geometry, and machined parts with tight true-position callouts. A digital micrometer is a hand-held tool that measures outside diameter or thickness with an anvil and spindle. They are not interchangeable.
At a shop I worked with, they bought a CMM because a big customer required full inspection reports for every part. Then a new shift lead asked why we still owned micrometers. The answer is speed and practicality: if a lathe operator needs to check a shaft diameter between passes, waiting for the temperature-controlled CMM room is ridiculous. A good digital micrometer gives you a 0.0001-inch readout right at the machine.
Here is the assumption that failed for us. We skipped calibrating a 0-1-inch micrometer for a rush job, telling ourselves it spent its whole life in a drawer and 'what are the odds?' The odds caught up with us: the first five parts of a 200-part order were machined 0.0006-inch undersized. The micrometer was reading high because the carbide faces were covered in dried coolant. That one mistake cost $2,300 in rework.
If you can only buy one, buy a digital micrometer. If you are measuring 50 identical critical dimensions per part, get a CMM. If your customer insists on CMM reports, that decision is already made for you.
How do I use a FLIR One thermal camera?
The FLIR One is a thermal camera that attaches to a smartphone. It can be very useful for electrical panels, motors, steam traps, and bearing surfaces. The basic workflow:
- Attach the FLIR One to your phone and open the FLIR One app.
- Choose MSX mode so the thermal image overlays the visible camera. It makes it easier to find the source.
- Set the emissivity before you trust any temperature number. Most electrical tape is around 0.95; bare shiny metal can be 0.1 to 0.3. If you don't set it, you are only guessing.
- Hold still, focus by tapping the screen, and snap multiple shots at different angles.
I almost bought the cheap generic thermal imager instead. So glad I didn't. On a breaker panel with a loose connection, the FLIR One caught a 132°F hot spot that separated the failing lug from the normal heat. Anyone could see the breaker was warm, but the camera showed exactly where the problem was.
There is a warning though: the FLIR One is not a replacement for an industrial thermal imaging camera. It is not designed for very high temperatures or 40-meter inspections. At least, that has been my experience. Use it to find hot spots up close; don't claim it gives you a certified thermographic survey.
When should you call a specialist instead of handling it yourself?
When the emergency becomes an ego contest. I have handled enough 2 a.m. callouts to know that the phrase 'I got this' usually costs more than the original fix.
If you are in an Emerson environment and the instrument is still under warranty, call Emerson. If you are using a CMM for the first time on a critical fixture, rent a metrology tech for half a day. If you are about to open a damaged thermal switch on a live panel, stop.
The industry has evolved: in the old days, only engineers had access to precision tools. Now you can order a 0.0001-inch digital micrometer online and get it tomorrow. That accessibility is good, but it creates a false sense of expertise. A convenient purchase does not replace calibrations, standards, and experience. That is true in measurement, thermal imaging, and process control.
