Both work, but I have a tie-breaker. I've bought from the Emerson store when I needed a standard dp transmitter and wanted the serial number tied to my company's records. The Emerson store also lets you download product documents by serial number—or rather, it makes you search by model, which is close enough. A distributor can be just as good if they're authorized and if they offer local support. Neither is universally better. There have been times when I had two hours to decide before a plant restart, and I just went with the distributor who answered the phone. Normally I'd compare, but that was a time-pressure call.
What I avoid is the listing that says 'compatible with Emerson' but won't show a real part number or calibration certificate. If you need traceability, the source matters more than the price.

This is where I made my biggest mistake. I saw the letters '3051' and stopped reading. The full model code is what matters. For example, an Emerson DP transmitter model might start with 3051CD for differential pressure, 3051CG for gauge pressure, or 3051CA for absolute pressure. No, wait—I'm not going to tell you to memorize those. I'm going to tell you to document them.
In 2018, I missed the output option and ended up with a transmitter that spoke a different protocol than our control system (that's HART vs Fieldbus, in case you're new). No. Let me be clear: use the 117 for electrical checks, and use a loop calibrator when you're actually driving a signal into the DCS.
I told our team to buy the 117 first, then immediately worried I'd made a mistake. It didn't turn out to be a mistake, just an incomplete answer. A month later we bought a loop calibrator. If you're on a budget, get the 117 and borrow a calibrator.
How to turn on a Mitutoyo micrometer when the display is blank?
First, check whether it's digital. A mechanical Mitutoyo micrometer has no battery and no on/off button. If it's digital, look for the ON/OFF button on the thimble or the display bezel, depending on the model. Press it for half a second. If nothing happens, replace the battery. Mitutoyo uses an SR44 or LR44 button cell; the cap is either under a screw or pops straight off.
If the display stays blank after a new battery, you may have inserted it upside down. I've seen three 'dead' micrometers that just had the battery flipped. And if the screen shows INC, that's fine for relative measuring—press the ORIGIN button to return to absolute mode. No special startup sequence required.
What's the worst Emerson DP transmitter mistake you've seen?
The worst wasn't one big error, it was a chain of assumptions. I ordered four dp transmitters with a model code that a sales rep had typed in an email. One digit was wrong—wrong process connection for all four units. That was September 2022. The order cost $3,200, the site lost three days, and I got a lecture I still remember.
If you change the model code in the quote, read the description line back to the person who gave it to you. If that person isn't available, don't buy.
